Does Hypnosis For Weight Loss Work?

Losing weight and keeping it off is hard. Currently, 75% of men and 60% of Aussie women carry too much weight. Perhaps food is an emotional crutch, or you eat when bored. Hypnosis for weight loss may help your behaviour and emotions around food and steer you in the right direction.

How does hypnosis for weight loss work?
Hypnosis works by applying the principles of Strategic Psychotherapy. The therapist asks strategic questions to find out “how” you’re good at some things, such as driving a car or cooking spaghetti bolognese. Hypnosis helps you align that same level of control to healthy eating and exercise. You won’t drop 10kg for a wedding next week. But hypnosis may help you change your emotions and behaviour around food and exercise to lose weight and keep it off.

What will happen while I’m hypnotised to help me lose weight?
While you’re in a relaxed state, the therapist will guide your subconscious towards making better decisions and achieving realistic goals.

You’re in complete control during the process.
You will not be under the control of the hypnotist. Hypnosis focuses on accessing your innate abilities. While in a relaxed state, the therapist may offer ways to improve your lifestyle.

Perhaps you eat chocolate as a reward after a stressful day. Sitting in traffic might make you feel like buying an ice cream at the next petrol station. Watching TV at night may be boring without reaching for a bag of chips. These behaviours can be hard to break or even identify without the focused attention and clarity gained through hypnosis.

Guided imagery may help reduce food cravings for fatty or sugary foods.

“Every client is different. One lady would watch TV every night eating chocolate because she was bored,” says hypnotherapist Margaret Muscat.

“She liked carrot and cucumber sticks. So after our session, she made a healthy change.”

Does hypnosis help you lose weight?
There’s scientific evidence supporting the success of hypnosis for losing weight.

A 2018 study of patients with severe obesity focused on achieving self-control when eating a meal. The study found hypnosis helped the patients feel full after a meal. Habitual hypnosis users in the study showed greater weight loss than those who weren’t hypnotised.

Another study consisted of 32 obese patients participating in weekly hypnotherapy sessions for ten weeks. The aim was to develop a healthy and balanced diet. The results showed the patients had a lower BMI (body mass index) and less leptin in their blood, a hormone related to obesity.

A review of 119 scientific articles studying if hypnosis works for weight loss also showed promising results.

Most of the hypnotic sessions focused on changing dietary habits and behaviour around food. The results suggested patients lost weight during and long after the sessions. In some cases, between one to ten kilograms were lost. Another study showed that patients exercised more over the study in the hypnotised group compared to the group that wasn’t receiving treatment.

These studies show that hypnosis may improve eating habits and quality of life.

Hypnosis may help you develop a healthy lifestyle
Hypnosis is a tool that may help you lose weight. If you’ve tried dieting and losing weight by yourself, having hypnosis to guide you through the weight loss journey might help you overcome poor habits, emotional eating and cravings.

The sessions are designed to help develop a healthy lifestyle over the long term, rather than a quick fix. You have all the answers in your subconscious and simply need guidance and clarity to make a positive change.

“People know what they like to eat. It’s about enjoying life without missing out,” says Margaret.
